Harnessing AI for Forensics
Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Forensics Symposium
The project aims to create a framework of actionable guidelines for agency decision-makers to evaluate and administer artificial intelligence (AI) effectively and responsibly in their agencies. Although AI holds promise for improving communication, increasing investigative capacity, and streamlining administrative tasks in forensic investigations, potential risks such as data privacy concerns, analysis errors, and bias must be carefully considered.
RTI International hosted the Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Forensics Symposium at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center in Washington, D.C. on July 8-9, 2025. This symposium was a two-day collaborative event designed to bring together forensic practitioners and AI technology experts to connect and identify effective, practical applications of AI to modernize and strengthen forensic capabilities.
Through expert-led presentations, panel discussions, and topic-focused breakout sessions, participants explored use cases drawn from both forensics and other industries. Breakout sessions provided hands-on opportunities to brainstorm the development of AI-powered approaches for forensic science applications. Support for this event was provided, in part, by National Institute of Standards and Technology financial assistance award 70NANB24H237.
