Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International

Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International is an independent, nonprofit research institute dedicated to improving the human condition. Clients rely on us to answer questions that demand an objective and multidisciplinary approach—one that integrates expertise across the social and laboratory sciences, engineering, and international development.

Center for Forensic Sciences

The RTI Center for Forensic Sciences focuses on continuous quality improvement to enhance the current state of forensic science and its applications. Our multidisciplinary approach to supporting advancements in forensic science allows us the insight and ability to craft individualized results. Through our collaborations with members of the forensic science community, including scientists that investigate crimes, deaths, and other threats to public safety and public health, we have the unique and distinct advantage of developing innovative techniques and actionable data to solve challenges faced by governmental agencies, forensic laboratories, and criminal justice practitioners.

Center for Policing Research and Investigative Science

The RTI Center for Policing Research and Investigative Science partners with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders, such as crime laboratories and medical examiner and coroner offices. We actively collaborate to ensure our work has direct implications for the field and to help build the foundation of evidence-based policing. Policing is vital to ensure the safety and well-being of people and their communities. Law enforcement officers confront some of the most heightened and difficult challenges and must always strive to be vigilant, equitable, and fair. At the same time, many agencies are understaffed, under-resourced, and as the first responders to a wide range of events, sometimes undertrained.

Center for Community Safety and Crime Prevention

Scientists from the RTI Center for Community Safety and Crime Prevention study issues related to the prevalence, characteristics, and harms associated with criminal victimization, police and criminal justice response, provision of victim services, and efforts related to crime prevention and community well-being. We examine the costs and consequences of crime on our most vulnerable populations. Staff conduct innovative and rigorous research studies, program evaluations, and provide program and evaluation training and technical assistance. Our combined approaches assess “what works” and inform the development of evidence-based responses, translating research into practice.
