Guest Biography
Katherine Bright has lived in proximity to trauma her entire life, but professionally, she has worked with survivors for over 15 years. In her early twenties, Katherine worked as a practitioner, serving both teenage boys living in a residential facility and homeless/housed teenage mothers. These positions trained Katherine in trauma-informed practices, which she continues to employ in her work as a researcher today. Katherine has spent over a decade interviewing survivors of commercial sexual exploitation, human trafficking, sexual violence, state violence, homelessness, child abuse, intimate partner violence, incarceration, police brutality, poverty, and substance misuse. Her most recent project is focused on the collateral consequences of having a sexual victimization record posted online without consent. As part of Katherine’s commitment to improving research standards for both safety and dignity, this project is designed through a set of equity values and is structured through both survivor-informed and trauma-informed methodological practices. Katherine will be joining the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs faculty in the Fall of 2023. Outside of work, Katherine likes to walk amongst the trees or sit in the sun, both attempts to regulate her body. She pretends to like yoga, cooking and running but really, she doesn’t do any of these things. Instead, she eats a lot of ice cream, takes refuge in reading silly books, watches all the sports, and curses like a sailor.
