Just Forensic Nurse Coroners
In the third episode of our medicolegal death investigation special release season, Just Science interviews Bobbi Jo O’neal, the Chief Deputy Coroner of Charleston, South Carolina, who discusses the unique skills that forensic nurses can provide as coroners. Listen along as we discuss how Charleston County has learned to deal with mass fatality scenes and infant deaths by creating multidisciplinary teams, developing consistent interviewing methods, and other helpful techniques that the community can easily adapt.

Bobbi Jo O’Neal, a Registered Nurse and Board Certified Medicolegal Death Investigator with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators, is the Chief Deputy Coroner for the Charleston County Coroner’s Office in Charleston, South Carolina. An experienced emergency room nurse who received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, she become actively involved in the specialty of forensic nursing first in the area of sexual assault then as a death investigator. Ms. O’Neal is a former Director-at-Large for the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) from 2007-2009 and was on the Board of Directors for the IAFN Foundation from 2015-2017. Ms. O’Neal is currently on the Board of Directors and is the Chairman of the Board for the International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners (IACME). She is a member of the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME), a Fellow with the American Academy of Forensic Science (AAFS) and a member of the South Carolina Coroner’s Association. Ms. O’Neal is the 2016 recipient of the South Carolina Coroner’s Association Sue Townsend Award.
