In the final episode of our Resilient Leadership mini season, Just Science sat down with Brian Hoey from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Laboratory to discuss the importance of practicing good followership within a resilient workplace.

In the field of forensic science, there is often an emphasis on practicing good leadership, while few resources are devoted to cultivating good followership. As all practitioners oscillate between positions of leadership and followership, there is a need to better understand how both roles contribute to a resilient workplace. Listen along as Brian describes his experience as both a leader and a follower, creating a culture of mutual respect, and how to identify effective future supervisors.

Guest Biography

Brian Hoey is a twenty-nine-year veteran of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Laboratory. Brian worked much of his career as a DNA analyst and served as the DNA Technical Leader for eight years.  Brian is currently the Director of the Laboratory System. Brian holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in biology from Northern Illinois University as well as an M.B.A. from William Woods University. Brian served as a Member of the Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods (SWGDAM) for eight years as well as served on the Executive Board for three years. Brian is a Member of the Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientists (MAFS) where he served on the Board of Directors as the Treasurer for three years (2008-2011) and President (2013). Brian was awarded MAFS Outstanding Scientist in 2016. Brian has given talks and taught workshops for MAFS, Promega, the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD), and Bode to name a few. Brian is a certified facilitator for Police Leadership: The West Point Model. Brian is on the Forensic Laboratory Needs Technical Working Group (FLN-TWG) and is also a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) and ASCLD.
